Letter from a lady who discovered her Jewish
family - an immigrants story:
July 30 2012
Hi Phil
These photos come from my collection. My father, David Pollock, was
born in 1906, see the last picture of him with his older brother
Harry. Their uncle was Albert Rose, see first photo, tailoring
shop. It was bought by my grandfather and re-opened in the
Commercial road as Pollock Tailors, where it remained until
about1996. My grandmother emigrated from Riga when her father was
murdered on a train in Germany about1885, while carrying diamonds
back from Amsterdam or Antwerp to his shop in Riga. The 2nd photo is
of her registration card as she never became naturalised. The 3rd
photo is of my grandparents Abraham Pollock (originally Poliachek,
from Belarus and Berthe Schulman, my grandmother). You can add these
to your site if you wish. Sadly, my father married 'out' and I was
not made aware of my Jewish heritage until much later. I
have recently discovered my extended family in America where
Abraham's brothers and sister travelled on to.
Regards, Valerie
Valerie's photos are below in
the order described in her letter.
Meanwhile, I replied to
Valerie:
Hello Valerie,
Thank you so much for your fascinating letter and photos, which will
be on my website shortly (its now on!). It is good you have
discovered your Jewish background, but also be proud of your non
Jewish background – the two make a great combination.
Bests from London,
Phil
